The Conrad Tokyo had everything I love in a modern five-star luxury hotel: tasteful design seamlessly incorporating art and nature; well-appointed, spacious, and spotlessly clean rooms; and uniformly excellent staff. Whether refilling coffee, setting up a high chair, booking reservations, or making sightseeing and restaurant recommendations, everyone we encountered was fantastic.

Check-In
We took a taxi from another Tokyo neighborhood and were immediately greeted by multiple hotel staff members upon entering the porte cochere. Another person escorted to the elevators, which quickly whisked us up to the lobby level.
Welcome drink and oshibori (cold washcloth) to freshen your hands and face.
We were assisted at check-in by Yukiko Kawahima, who I wanted as my new BFF by the end of our four-night stay. If you have executive lounge access you get: breakfast in either the restaurant or the executive lounge (Kawahima-san recommended that the restaurant might be better with the baby) and executive lounge access with snacks and champagne in the evenings.

Case in point: the large format paintings near the elevators— just gorgeous, with a different color scheme on each floor.

Conrad Executive King Suite with Tokyo Bay View
The Suite was super spacious, with enormous ceilings and beautiful details. Note the repeating cherry blossom motif on the carpet and silk paneling. So pretty!
The Bay View Suite came with a full bath, separate bedroom, and a living area with a half bath. The bathroom was luxuriously large, with a tub within the larger shower area and a separate water closet.
Breakfast Buffet at Cerise
Cerise is one of four in-house dining options, but the only one open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Collage (modern French), China Blue (avante-garde Chinese dining), and Kazahana (Japanese traditional) are open for lunch and dinner, but not breakfast.
Breakfast is one of my favorite parts of vacation
On two or three of the mornings I ordered this perfectly cooked runny egg with truffle shavings atop a waffle — and it was insanely good. And while I know that it’s not good to eat eggs every day, I’m also not on vacation every day.
Conrad Tokyo Executive Lounge
Guests with access to the executive lounge can enjoy breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails.
Snacks, spirits, and a view.
We enjoyed snacks, champagne, and whiskey in the lounge during happy hour. Our first night was the least crowded (and therefore most pleasant), by our last night every seat was filled. Staff will help you find a seat if it’s popping.
Conrad Tokyo’s Shimbashi Neighborhood
Shimbashi is known as a business district, but it’s right next door to Ginza, where you should be spending some time anyway if you love to shop like me. Many of the buildings in the neighborhood are brand new mixed-use commercial & residential projects. So while Shimbashi may lack some of the charm of quieter, more traditional Japanese neighborhoods, being in a “newer” area means there’s always lots to eat and drink in close proximity.
If you’re a fan of Hayao Miyazaki (director of Spirited Away and my personal favorite, Tonari No Totoro, check out the massive Ghibili clock just a short walk away from the hotel, at the Nippon TV tower. It has a set schedule so look it up before you make a special trip.
